i3/i5 = nv 420M + optimus via on-chip graphics
i7 = nv 425M, no optimus (so bit more power hungry outside of games).
Without sounding dumb and not being up to speed which is the best for some gaming if needed?

Bigger number = better performance, but there's not much in it.
You can check out some benches here:

Just to clarify (sorry if I'm stating the obvious), i3/i5 have on-chip graphics (intel 3000, I think) and using NV's optimus tech via the Forceware drivers, will switch seamlessly between the on-chip and discreet graphics depending on whether you launch a 3D app. i7 has no on-chip graphics so you're stuck with the discreet graphics all the time, hence slightly bigger power draw.
Quite a few XPSs on the outlet today, including a few with full HD screens, so looking more encouraging than last week.
