hey!

i have a dell laptop which is going to be used with the lid exclusively closed, as a multimedia portion of a 'home cinema'

it will be constantly in sleep mode, and woken when needed via my keysonic wireless touchpad.

i was concerned about heat with it being on a fair bit, so bought the zalman nc2000 cooler which makes it icy cold :)

but i am still concerned about the fact that the screen is shut, screen damage or key heat-shadows being created, i was looking at these cooling pads, material, thermaltake etc

and wondering if it would be of benefit for me to put one between the keyboard and the screen, and not completely close the lid but allow it to rest down on this pad? with an approximate half inch gap being created by this insert

from what i read the pads suck/draw the heat downwards from the base of a laptop when used as they are meant to be used

in my configuration can anyone think of a detrimental angle of this?

would this likely introduce heat where it wasnt before, near the screen!?!

it would be being used in conjunction with my zalman cooler, not instead of.

thanks for any different angles or views on this.

stick a sheet of tinfoil between 2 sheets of paper and slid it in the gap, it should reflect most of the heat away from the screen if you leave the lid open slightly (1-2mm)

costs almost nothing to make and try it to see if it works ok.

Rather an extreme method but I would personally detach the screen from the casing, quite straight forward to do really given the correct tools and disassembly manual, wouldn’t have to worry about the above issues :D

If the lid/screen is shut then it won't get hot and most modern laptops shouldn't get hot in the keyboard, mousepad areas, well certainly none of mine do but the underside is always toasty.
