Laptop displays wrong aspect ratio at native resolution

hi. i've got a dell inspiron 6000 with ati mobility radeon x300. the laptops native resoltuion is 1280x800 (as read in the bios). i've just updated the bios, the graphics drivers and the chipset drivers and it hasnt; changed.

windows displays ok in this resolution, but i think the aspect ratio is wrong. when i look at the time, the "round" clock is not so round. more like 4:3.

is this normal or have i not set something up right? i can't find anything in ati's settings about the aspect ratio but i would rather have correct aspect ratio and borders on the side. (it's stretched horizontally).

Borders at the side?

If the outputted display res is running at the native res of the screen then it's set up correctly and there is nothing to worry about.

Could you post a picture of this problem if you are sure it's not your eyes playing tricks on you? :p, a friend of mine had a i6000 with the same screen and everything looked fine on that machine.

Problem is the inspiron 6000 came with different resolutions:
1920 x 1200 WUXGA
1680 x 1050 WSXGA
1280 x 800 WXGA

I'm thinking this could be just a side effect of having the same physical size with three different resolutoins (and the lowest resolution getting the raw end of the deal because the laptop was actually designed for the top spec 1920x1200 screen).

Can you actually select 1280 x 800 as a resolution in your gfx driver settings?

If you can then that is what you should have and everything should be round.

If not, you could use something like Rivatuner to make a bespoke resolution which matches your screen.

Also all those resolutions stated are all the same ratio 16:10 so it wouldn't matter which screen you had.

that is hte resolution selected in the settings. that's why this is so wierd, because it's actually set at the native resolution yet the clock is stil not round.
