Laptop doing a strange screen blanking when running on battery?

I've run out of ideas, throwing it out there... Presumed this was a software rather than hardware thing, but it's a HP/Compaq nx7400 if anyone thinks that's relevant.

My work laptop has a strange problem of changing to a blank (well, coloured) screen when running on battery - not off as if it was on standby. This will be while I'm using it, not after a certain amount of time. The only way I can get it back is to then put the laptop into standby and resume again.

Not linked it to any particular program I run, the screen colour isn't always the same, sometimes very dark blue or green, sometimes black!

Any ideas?

Hmm, appears to be just when I have wireless turned on. I'm going to try newer drivers from Intel, I'll see if it happens again...

I had a similar problem with my Toshiba laptop. I found out that it was a known issue and they had a firmware update to fix it. Installed, no further problems. You could try that route with HP.
