I'm getting a 2nd hand laptop this weekend....one which is capable of running Vista and will be used mainly for web browsing, office work and playing basic games like the sims 2.
It comes with a 120gb 4200rpm drive but I've got a spare 60gb 5400rpm drive.

Not sure whether to keep the 120 installed, or swap it for the 60 which runs slightly faster.....for 1; would i notice a performance difference and 2; would 60 be enough for vista, office, apps and sims (for example)

As I noticed a 5400->7200 difference in xp, I'd say go with the 5400 drive. A quick look at my hd says that you should be fine, unless you have more than 20 gb of office data....

I personally got a Hitatchi TravelStar 80gig drive for my laptop. It's 5400rpm, 8Mb cache, single platter and uses very little power. It's also so much faster than the cr@ppy Toshiba 60Gb 4200rpm drive it replaced.

Cheap too at £30!
