Hi guys, not great with computers and my old laptop is on its way out so I'm looking to replace it for under the £400 mark. Generally for work and the occasional gaming.

I've looked around and saw these:

Which is the better deal? Samsung is a well known brand but the other one seems cheaper and better.
Failing which, is there any other laptops out there that you could recommend?

Cheers in advance

Welcome to OcuK.
Hands are tied with an answer to your question though mate as we can only post For Oc products & not against them & we can hardly send you off to a competitor can we :p
Lappys for that money are much of a muchness though so you can't go far wrong.
Good Luck :)

what kind of gaming? That laptop is fine for general purpose but anything else then no.

Any gaming at all i'd recommend a dedicated card dude. And yep you can get laptops for around your budget with dedicated graphics cards (8600 and the like)

Take a gander at the other threads in here for clues. :)

Not the highest spec gaming, just the odd RTS like warcraft 3. I've got a console for the heavy stuff. Really the question is whats the best spec/most reliable laptop i could get from OC for under £400.

Out of those 2 I'd go for the Samsung if i had to, It looks better & has 2gig of ram, You Must have 2 gig of ram on a new lappy with Vista or it'll be like stepping back 5 years.
Chip only has 1mb of cache on that one though & on the other it has 2
Decisions, Decisions.
I'd want 2 of cache & 2 of ram to be happy but then i am only happy in the 10 minutes after sex :D
Samsung out of those 2 though but as Surfer says (it was him it was him :p) If you want to game then onboard suxs.

Out of those 2 listed, the Belnea would be the one to get, imo. (Just for the CPU) Would definately need another gig of memory put into it though, not a big deal though. Memory is usually an easy upgrade and it's fair cheap at the moment. :)

Maybe have a look at some low end Dell options.

installing ram is easy in a laptop, just make sure it is compatible before you make the purchase.

Also look at one of the big manufactures of pcs and you will find the vostro systems to be very good value too

You can say the word DELL here btw!

Had a look at some dells, came up with this:

Vostro 1500
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T5270 (1.40 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2-cache)
Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium
15.4" Wide Screen WXGA (1280 x 800) Display
2048MB (2x1024) 667MHz DDR2 Dual Channel
120GB (5400rpm) SATA Hard Drive
128MB nVidia® GeForce® 8400M GS
Primary 6-cell Lithium-Ion Battery (56 WHr)

for around the £390 mark. It has the 2mb cache and 2 gb of memory as recommended, what do you think? Is it better than the samsung I previously mentioned?

For gaming, yes that's much better. Thing is though it's only about £100 more for 8600M GT with 256mb vram (many games need 256mb these days) and a 2GHz C2D. Or the spec in my sig I got for £550 inc.

Myself I think it's a bit of a false economy going for the cheapest since it'll be less capable and obsolete sooner. But definitely don't go for integrated graphics.
