Laptop for uni...

Just pretend you're 'dyslexic' and they will give you a free macbook.

Depends on your LEA or who's giving out the laptop :(

On mine (from MK when I applied for uni) they said they would only get it from some cheap rubbish supplier, so I ended up with a year old asus deal and the rest of my budget blown on insurance! Free laptop is free laptop but I wasn't pleased that I could have had a macbook with the budget provided really...

I would go to a few lectures and then decide if a laptop would help you out. Having a laptop would be good for some people and bad for others.

from my first year at uni, studying Artificial intelligence and cybernetics (which shares a lot of the lectures with the electronic engineering students) i would highly recommend not bringing a laptop to uni unless you have very good willpower.

in most lecture halls you will find an internet connection, so if you have a laptop it is almost impossible not to go on facetube or whatever during the lecture. even without the internet solitaire will prove to be far more interesting than most lectures. there will be some people bringing laptops into the lectures but a simple pen and paper will do just fine.

laptops can be useful for some group projects you will inevitably be doing, but generally as long as someone in your group has a laptop everything will be ok so even that isnt a major reason to get a laptop for uni. personally ive got a cheapish gaming PC (~£490 in february) and its been perfect for what i need out of it

if your taking your pc i really wouldn't bother

mine just sat unused until i had chance to take my pc home and even then i didn't use it all that much.

you won't need it in the library because there will be plenty of computers and you would rather sit at them with course mates .

you won't use it in lectures because you will see that only 2 people do , one of them is a bit special and the other just gets loads of abuse for causing noise with typing and eventually fails due to a football manager addiction.

you won't use it wherever you live because your pc will be there.
