Laptop hard drive Hitcahi 40GB

Well, i bought this hitachi hard drive sold as faulty. just to see if it would still work. it does to an extent! but no i'm stuck for ideas!!

when i power it up using a ide to usb lead. it powers up but makes a start stop clunking noise again and again. any thoughts? also do laptop hard drives need a jumper config?!

are you sure?

i googled it for a bit before putting it on here, i read that it can be a cause of the jumpers not being set right.

any one know of the jumper configuration for laptop hard drives?

The only jumper settings I know of on Hitachi lappy drives are the usual master/slave/cable select settings and only setting to slave with no master on the cable will cause a problem - the drive won't be detected by the PC.

As for the clunking that's a sure fire sign that it's dead or very close to death.
