Hi everyone my old vaio K415S has almost had it its really slow and heats up and the fan is going full whack 24/7 (apart from when its turned off ) i wanted to ask your advice, could i replace the hard drive and install vista and once i have vista could i upgrade my ram to 4 gig, max is currently 1 gig. i am not fussed about all the sony crap and the recovery partion because it was reparied once and they didnt use an original sony part and know it wont except the recovery disk.

thanks

I'm not sure if it would support 4gig, you should be able to get 2gig alright though.
Replacing the hard-drive wouldn't be too difficult, would just need a decent speed IDE drive.

It'd be worth completely taking the laptop apart and reseating all heatsinks with some good thermal paste. Some of the old P4 laptops got really hot and a couple years of dust build up wont help at all.
I dunno if Vista would be the best OS choice to put on it, XP would run far quicker. :)

just to echo ED this wont run vista too well at all, the max ram you can put in this is 2x 512 sticks, if you dont fancy taking it apart to clean the dust out you can get compressed air duster in a can from your local stationery shop, but if it has a "carpet of dust build up" it will need stripping as air wont break it up.
