I'v got a laptop which doesn't boot in to windows, on the hard drive I have got some data which I need to take out.

I was thinking to take out the hard drive and put it on a caddy and connect it to my desktop so I can transfer the data ?

Can that be done?

Yes it can. If it's SATA then the connectors are identical to desktop ones. If it's IDE then you'll need some sort of adapter, IDE to USB works well.

Ah, bloody auto correct got it completely wrong!!

Do you know what connections the drive has?

Edit: I tend to jury-rig the drive with a SATA lead from the PSU and spare data cable going to the motherboard, windows should detect the drive and allow you to search.

160 GB - Serial ATA

So connect the SATA to the mobo and a power cable from the psu to the hard drive ?

yep :)

But during boot you might to double check the boot sequence, as my board likes to boot from new drives time to time.
