Hello all.

My mate's laptop has gone down the pan, the windows install is corrupt and I'm pretty sure its because the hard drive is failing. He's got some stuff on there that he would like to get off (if its not already been lost). I know nothing about laptops, been a desktop man forever, so I'm not really sure about how I could go about this. I've been looking at this caddy. Now am I right in thinking that you just unscrew the laptop, pull out the hard drive, stick it in this caddy and it will act like a usb external hard drive so I can just pull the files off it?

Also, this is only going to be a one off jobby so I was thinking of advising him to get the cheapest one going. Is there any reason why a cheap one is not a good idea? Could it lose the data?

Thanks for any advice.

Yeah that'll be ok if you have a sata laptop hard drive.

This one will be fine for IDE laptop drives. And yes it'll just show up like a removable flash drive, very handy devices to have.

While it's hooked up to another computer, run a Check Disk on it from command prompt, this fixes quite a lot of boot issues (assuming it's just the data that's corrupt, and not a dying drive).

chkdsk e: /f
(change "e" to whatever drive letter the drive is)
