Laptop HD replacement

Hi all, I am looking to replace a faulty Seagate ST500LM012 drive in my Samsung laptop. However I have no idea which to buy.

The general opinion seems to be suggesting a WD drive but it is difficult to choose between them. I do a fair bit of video editing, so thought the Scorpio Black could be the one to go for. But would the higher RPM make that much difference? I have also read it is quite loud. Has anyone experienced this? Is it likely to be louder than the Seagate I have?

If anyone has any thoughts, or alternative suggestions I would appreciate it.

I do not think a SSD is affordable for me.

Also, is there any way of knowing if my laptop supports a 2nd HD?

do you have the make and model of the laptop to hand at all?

what size HDD are you looking for as you are limited by the HDD needing to be laptop size of 2.5 instead of 3.5

the 7200rpm drive will give you better speeds but this may result in your laptop using more power but you should get better performance from the 7200 drive

Hi, I am unsure if I have room for the bigger drive. My model is Samsung NP300E5A-A0HUK.

The extra power isn't a big concern, I use it plugged in. But I think it would bug me if it was particularly noisy.

re: the SSD, I would consider that if I could install it in the OD slot but as a main HD the size would be too small.

I would get a Samsung M9T 2TB 9.5mm SATA 2.5 inch Internal Hard Drive. I have one and it gets about 100MB/s and its very quiet. Just need to check that you laptop can use 9.5mm drives.
 
My WD Caviar Black died a few weeks ago (murdered by my similarly dead laptop) and the warranty is still on till 2017. I heard they are supposed to be among the best for reliability, but you can see why I'd be hesitant to recommend one (it cost me £420 to retrieve the data, ouch). Samsung is also a good manufacturer of hard drives, particularly their SSDs, but I haven't heard much said about their mechanical drives.

Usually people go with Seagate or Western Digital for mechanical hard drives and I can attest to a Seagate Barracuda lasting 4-5 years (dying not dead, when it was replaced). But again, folks seem to prefer the WD Black. If you're okay with 500GB, why not go for a Samsung 750 Evo SSD for ~£150?
