i have a dell d620 laptop . it currently has a 120gb hard drive that i wish to upgrade to a 500gb drive .
i know that the laptop has a native sata 1.5gb controller . will a new laptop drive with sata 2 give me any trouble ?

No trouble at all - your laptop will work fine with a SATA 2 hard drive. The only issue is that the maximum speed will be limited by the laptop's SATA 1 interface- however for most uses I'm sure 150MB/s is plenty.

I just upgraded my (very similar spec, SATA 1) Dell Inspiron 9400 with a 120GB SSD (SATA 2) and it is working great.

so putting a sata 2 drive in there wont cause problems?

as i remember a good few years back putting sata 2 drives on an old motherboard with a sata 1 controller and those drives heated up to ridiculous tempratures.

Yes, some older controllers had issues with running SATA 2 drives. However, your laptop uses an intel ICH7 (intel I/O controller hub), so you will have no problems.
