I was just looking for some advice please about a rather odd problem that cropped up this morning when I turned on my laptop.
Yesterday, I used my laptop as normal all day, and stuck it into sleep when I went to bed. About an hour later, it spontaneously started itself up again, and it woke me up. I was grumpy at the time, so just lifted the lid and held down the power button for it to switch off.
Went to sleep and didn't think anything of it.
This morning, I switched on, and it asked me, as expected about starting in safe mode or normal due to a funny shut down. I selected the normal and windows vista began to load (all is ok).
Then it tells me that it wants to check disc consistency on the D: ( I have a partitioned HDD) so I let that tick over. I can't remember the exact error, but it mentioned a corrupt MFT, and that windows could try to recover it.
So i waited. and waited.
I'm not a very patient person, and not an ace with computers (As you can tell) as at this point I again, held in the button and restarted, thinking that it'd frozen.
This time on start up it gave me the option to run some sort of disc repair check, before I got to the windows loading screen, and I selected this option.
This took me to a screen of the typical Vista bluey greeny background, with a box which said it could take over an hour to scan and repair the HDD.
Eventually, after this time improving my patience, windows loaded.
But again I got the MFT Error.
I was confused and upset
So I called my boyfriend (despite the fact it was ten past 7 - he wasn't that impressed!)
He told me to just sit and wait, and distracted me, and eventually I got onto the log in screen, and everything seemed normal.
He guided me to
cntl panel -> adminstrative tools -> Event Viewer
That showed up a couple of errors, but none related to the HDD.
So we then went through CMD and typed in the command
chkdsk d:
which brought up the mft error with advice of /f to repair
so...
chkdsk d: /f and then
chkdsk d: (to check)
and it said all was well.
I've been through all my files and everything seems to be ok.
So, after all that, my question!
May i have some advice on what could have caused this problem?
It was totally out of the blue (I suppose that's pc's for me...) -
could it to be due to the fact I held in the standby button, which may have led to this HDD corruption? Yet I'm bemused how it sort of fixed itself?
I'd like to know to ensure that I don't have a similar problem again, especially if I caused it, and so that I don't ever have to ring my boyfriend again so early and wake up his whole household in the mean time!
Thank you (and sorry there's a lot of detail to read!)
