Laptop HDD Problem

Every time i boot up a laptop it says

"Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key"

Now i have the hdd set as primary boot device in the bios. I also have tried a fix boot in the recovery console, its clear the windows xp os boot file system is knackered but nothing is working. Now there is some very important data on this laptop and im absolutely stumped as to how i can get this data off before formatting it to fix this boot problem.

Its a Sony Vaio VGN-A217M, and yes is out of warranty

Easiest way is going to be to get yourself a 2.5" HDD external caddy, remove the lappy disk and put it in the caddy. You should then be able to hook the caddy up to another PC and retrieve the data.
