My HDD in my laptop is making odd noises. I suspect epic fail is not far around the corner.

Whats the best laptop drive to replace it with? Current size is 100gb. Nothing smaller, but it doesnt need to be enormous. Want something reasonably quick but not hugely noisy.

cheers guys!

Depending on buget id look at ether (Is it a SATA or IDE drve?):

Seagate Momentus 7200.4 320GB 7200RPM SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (ST9320423AS)
Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB 7200RPM SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (WD3200BEKT)

my personal pref would be to go with thr WD though.

If money is no object look at a Intel 160Gb G2 drive.

I use a Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB in my laptop, very pleased with it, fast, reasonably quiet and good value now. I would recommend it.

western digital all the way ;)

reviews i read generally give gold to the westies over the seagates. 5400rpms outperforming 7200s in lots of the benchmarks.

btw i was on the WD site the other day and saw them listing 1tb & 750gb laptop hdds.. when did this happen? insane.

Just recently, and they arent laptop drives - too fat to fit. They are for their MyBook external range.

I bought the Seagate Momentus 7200.4 320GB for my PS3, which is quiet & quick. Recommended :)

It probably gets boring hearing this, I have installed ssd's in 2 laptops now. The performance is hugely noticeable, plus they are silent, and shock proof.

I personally think ssd's give greater gains to a laptop than a desktop.
As desktop hd's are already pretty fast the step up to a ssd isn't as great as the step-up from a 2.5" hd to a ssd.
A laptop is the kind of tool where you want fast boot/loading times etc.

I also recommended WD Scorpio Black model WD3200BJKT for detailed, its 16MB buffer cache and 7200 rpm rotation speed are very high for 320GB hard drive.

Another +1 for the WD Scorpio Black, had a 320gb in a Dell Inspiron 1520 and currently have one in my MBP. Rapid drives, can't fault them and at £52.99 you can't go wrong :)

I have a 500GB Scorpio Blue in my Netbook. Nice drive, no problems so far.

Might just be coincidence, but I have been replacing quite few Scorpio Blue 320GB drives in Dell laptops recently. The drive just stops being detected by the laptop. Not sure if it's a firmware issue or not (I think WD install the firmware on one of the platters in a secure area so not sure if it's getting corrupted). Haven't had any other brands failing in unusual numbers in the same laptops. This made me a bit paranoid about my Scorpio Blue so I backed it up last weekend (took a while as I have my iTunes Library on there - 195GB!).
