Hi guys,

I'm in need of a laptop instead of my big clunky desktop. I don't exactly play any games any more so I don't need anything too exciting but I don't want a slug either.

I'd have about £400 to spend on it.

I was looking at the Inspiron 17 - 3721

Code:
Processor: Intel® Core™ i3-3227U (3M Cache, up to 1.90 GHz) with Intel® HD 4000 Graphics
 Windows® 8
 6 GB DDR3 Dual Channel 1600MHz (2 DIMMs)
750 GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
 8X DVD+/- RW Drive
 17.3 inch High Definition+ (1600 x 900) LED Display with TrueLife
 Windows® 8 64bit (Englilsh)
Wireless : Dell Wireless 1704 Card
 LCD Back Cover : Black
 Battery: Primary 4-cell 40W/HR
 Internal Qwerty Keyboard

It's within my budget but I didn't know whether it would be better to pay a bit more and get an i5. *I do backup my DVDs so I can play all my media through my AV receiver.

The reviews look good but having never owned a laptop I don't really know too much about these mobile processors.

Thanks for any help :)

*(I own all the DVDs, just too hard to manage a big DVD collection when it's not digital :))*

How about this for £402ish

Inspiron 17R - 5720
Inspiron 17R - 5720
Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-3210M (2.50 GHz)
Windows® 8
4 GB DDR3 Dual Channel 1600MHz SDRAM Memory (1 DIMM)
750 GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
8X DVD+/-RW Drive
Display : 17.3 Inch High Definition+ (900p) WLED TrueLife
Graphics : 1 GB Nvidia GeForce GT 630M
Back Up Media Not Included
Windows® 8 64bit (Englilsh)
Wireless : Dell Wireless 1704 Card
LCD Back Cover : Moon Silver Switch Cover
Battery : Primary 6 Cell 48W/HR
Internal Qwerty Keyboard

Faster CPU and GPU combination will let it last longer as a viable system imo.

should be easier to upgrade in the future down the road also.

I did see that one but the 4GB of RAM put me off a bit.

Was the price including delivery and vat?

Quick question as well, can these graphics cards be upgraded at all? Might be stupid but having never owned a laptop, I've genuinely got no idea :)

Cheers

its even better that it has 4Gb - much cheaper to add urself - cheaper and hassle free (usually take cover off , slide in to slot-job done ! :)

Have a look for the Lenovo Z500, can be had new for £479, bought the wife one recently and its a cracking laptop, well spec'd and solidly built :)

Get an SSD in there if you can, it will reduce the noise and power consumption and speed things up no end.

Adding more ram down the road is not a massive chore, atm it is pretty dirt cheap, as well as this it should hassle free to add a second HDD for storage etc even a third with this design, not sure, you would have to do some digging.

Adding 2nd drive to 17R model 5720

You can also see the RAM slots here also.

Thanks for the input guys. Looks like a good buy then.

Is there anyway to upgrade the graphics on it? I noticed it had an Nivea card in but I couldn't find anything about upgrading it.

Cheers

The GT 630M will be soldered onto the motherboard so no upgrade l am afraid.

The GT 630M (re-badged GT 540M) is covered here on this link.

It is good for light gaming low to medium settings depending on game and res.

Regards.

C.

BTW the £402ish included del and vat.

That's not too bad really then. I doubt I'd even play any games on it, I have my xbox for the tiny bit of casual gaming I do.

Thanks a lot for your help buddy.

*Off to check funds and make an order hopefully!*
