It would appear my laptop has got a virus, its coming up on bootup telling me about it and firefox and IE both crash when I try and load them up.

For the life of me I cant remember the warning message I get on bootup but ive tried all the obvious things, safe mode, etc etc to no avail!

I have backed up all my files and just considering resetting windows completely, is this something I should be avoiding at all costs? I mean software is easy to get back on there but things such as the internal wireless adapter etc, will they function ok straight after. One major issue is that we cant find the windows Xp disc which im sure will turn up somewhere but for now we are CD-less.

Any help or advice on this matter is much appreciated!

As said in 1st post ive tried the safe mode trick with a few different programs.

I believe the infected file is called zafira.exe?

I've reinstalled Windows on my laptop a couple of times. As long as you can get your hands on the proper drivers and utilities, you shouldn't have any problems with things like the wireless card.

its unlikely wireless will work straight away....its best to download all drivers in advance.
google the model of your laptop and finding the drivers should be easy enough

ive done it more than once...never been a problem and even if you do have a problem you could always post back ...im sure someone here will be able to help direct you in the right direction for drivers.

What make and model is your laptop? It might (if you are lucky) have a restore partition which you can boot up from. Also as memory suggests, download the drivers friom the manufacturers website, put them onto CD. Then you should borrow an OEM (presume that's the version you have on your laptop already) CD of Windows XP from a friend, using the key supplied with your laptop you can then reinstall windows and the drivers and then you should be all set to go. :)

Personally I'd feel safer just doing a full format+reinstall. At least then you know you've got rid of the infection, never know if Kaspersky and the like are going to miss something.
