Laptop not connecting to internet

In CMD run:

ipconfig /flushdns

then run these

ping bbc.co.uk
ping 212.58.251.195


do they both work?

This is what they displayed.

I can't format it, it has lots of special programmes on it that uni put there for him, I wouldn't want to risk disrupting them.

If all else fails I am just sending him to the IT team at uni, just means he can't use it until then.

That suggests DNS is broken.

DNS is 192.168.1.1, changing it to 8.8.8.8 didn't help.

Where did you change this setting?
 
In the NIC's (Network card) properties page, uncheck IPv6.

Then highlight IPv4, go to properties, make sure everything is auto in both tabs. Then click Advanced, make sure there's no rogue entries there.

Press OK on all except 1st window. Press diagnose. It should reinitialise the NIC, see if it comes up with any errors.
