laptop power issue

hi

if a laptop battery is not holding its charge if I plug it into the mains will it still work, or does the battery have to be charged

also if I take the battery out and plug the latop into the mains it will not turn on,

absolutley nothing,

however there is a green light on the box on the power cord so i know the charge is getting through there.

A laptop does not need a battery to run off the mains, sounds like a psu problem.

Mine needs the battery inserted to be able to run off the mains. Then again it IS and acer

with and without the battery I get nothing, no lights etc

left it to charge over night and nothing
