Sorry if this doesnt belong here, as its a laptop cpu query

Anyone know if theres a speed difference between .....

AMD Turion 64 X2 1.6Ghz
Intel Core 2 Duo 1.67Ghz

Desktop speeds tell me theres a big difference, also do the mobile ones have the same overclockability like the desktop ones do....

Thanks

The Core 2 Duo is a bit faster. The turion is basically a laptop tweaked AMD64 X2 core, the Core 2 Duo chip is a slightly weaker version of the desktop chip, so the core 2 will be a bit faster. If its cheaper or same price, get that one, if the rest of the spec is up to par, if not compare prices and specs :D

c2d will own the x2 at everything, as for overclocking, laptops tend to have zero options for cpu overclocking unless you buy a dell xps m1710 with a T7600G, that has options for overclocking over 3ghz.

what are these options to overclock ?

If I were to give an honest opinion, I'd say don't buy an Acer. Crap build quality. See if you can pick up an HP (Compaq) NX series or an IBM/Lenovo laptop. Samsung aren't too bad the moment either (although slightly poncy).

£80 more on the intel over the amd, both acers with same spec on everything else

The Core 2 Duo is faster than the Turion 64 but £80 is a fair bit of money

I've read that for a desktop system, clock for clock a Core 2 Duo is about 25% faster than an AMD Athlon X2. As the Core 2 Duo is slightly slower in the laptop and the Turion is slightly quicker, perhaps the mobile Core 2 Duo will be 20% faster?

You've got to ask yourself whether that 20-25% increase in speed offered by the Core 2 Duo is worth the £80. Neither are slow chips

If you buy a special g version of the t7600 cpu the dell bios unlocks options to move the multiplier up or down, allowing a good overclock.

cheers.
shame I aint got that chip in my 1710 :(

Just thought I would add my opinon of the core 2 duos available in the laptops.

I have just purchased a philips X56 as my previous laptop is now keeping my mum happy and I must say I am very impressed.

The processor is a Core 2 duo (merom (sp) 667FSB, 2mb cache) T5600 rated at 1.83GHZ.

A rough guide to performance would be a super pi 1mb test takes 31 seconds.

(For a quick comparison my old laptops dothan 1.6ghz takes 51 seconds & my old desktop running a X2 3800+ @ 2.6ghz took 34 seconds).

Applications performance appears to me improved over the dothan although the difference is minimal.

I think you need to weigh up what you are going to be using the laptop for and whether the increased price of the core 2 duo can be justified. (ie if you are only going to be browsing the web, e-mail, general office apps the extra power of the core 2 would be wasted.)
