Hi guys

joined in the vane attempt that someone might be able to help me out.

I have an Asus A2500D laptop and I think the little board which the screen plugs into is bust. The laptop was dropped, but no damage was done other than a small crack in the bottom housing. The laptop still worked fine and the screen was ok too.

I stupidly took the board out, and fixed the crack, but when I turn the lappy on, nothing appears on the screen and it just does one long beep and shuts off. I can find nothing on the net about these laptops and the manual is rubbish too. Sometimes though, the laptop does boot but the screen is incredibly dark and hard to read. You can just make out the windows log on screen.

This board, that the monitor plugs into, also houses the power button which does not work but the LEDs for the HDD and power are here too and they do work, there is another seperate button at the front of the machine which you can use instead to turn the laptop on.

So if no one has any ideas or links I can look at, can they suggest a reliable laptop repairer. I'm thinking about going the whole way and getting them to replace the cracked case with a new one too. I really like this laptop and it would be a shame to ditch it.

Thanks and soz for long post

After a laptop has been dropped there is a bit of a grey area with repairs

First off you said that it often shuts down with error beeps, it shouldn't do this with or without a screen, it is very possible that you accidentally broke the board when you were fixing the crack.

In terms of repair it is obviously up to you if you go ahead but i'd advise cation, if the laptop has been dropped it is likely that a lot of the hardware has been damaged, it may still to appear have been functioning after the drop, but in such instances board damage, hard drive damage, cpu damage could well have occoured and after repairing its current problem you could find other hardware failing in the near future.

Also for laptop repair you could be paying in excess of £300 to get hardware problems like this fixed as laptops are much much more difficult to repair/upgrade than PC's also repalcement hardware costs a lot.

If you still want to go ahead with repair the best bet is to look for local retail stores, I've found that going to the bigger companies is usually pretty useless as they are earning millions and won't really care that much about your problems but small stores will normally bend over backwards to try and keep you happy.

Alternitively you could claim on inshurance, get a new laptop and mabye fork out around £40 to have your data transferred from the old hard drive to the new one.

Sorry if this isn't the response you'd hoped for but I hope it helps

see the problem here is that the inverter is now broken after you dropped the laptop. Ive had this problem on 2 previous laptop and it required a new inverter and lcd which set me back a good 300 quid each time as i got a repair place i found online to do it. However if your confident that you can do the work yourself you should be able to source the right lcd and inverter over the net, usually using the famous auction website but sometimes this requires waiting for the parts to show up.

What spec is the laptop? The same model number seems to be selling for £350 on the aformentioned auction place so it might be better off to keep the hard drive and buy the one on there an simply switch the drive over, then sell the broken one for spares.

Do you have a monitor output on the laptop?

It shouldn't beep even if the screen wasn't working (as someone else suggested), so it sounds like something else has gone astray. Ensure that everything is tightly connected back in and try again.

Hi Guys, Thanks for the replies.

I removed the screen from the board inverter and it works on another Asus Laptop, so thats fine. I'm pretty sure its just that I've damaged the board whilst trying to Fix the crack.

When I say dropped, my other half mentioned that it wasnt a big drop, more akin to a large shoe catching the laptop bag whilst on the floor.

I rang Asus and they estimate £150 - £200.
