Hey, I don't know too much about PC laptops but basically a friend is looking to upgrade.

She's currently got a 4 ish year old toshiba something or other and is an architecture student, so it needs to be capable of running photoshop/CAD fairly reasonably.

I'm on the same course and get by fine with my desktop and powerbook; I would tell her to go for a desktop but she has to travel.

So, what would you suggest?

Budget is £800 ish
Reliability is pretty important, her 4 year old toshiba hasn't had any problems yet.

What is a good, solid brand? I've always favoured Toshiba/samsung/acer and not looked to kindly on Sony/Dell...

I'd suggest giving the new Dell Studio 17 a good hard look.

The base option for £779 comes with:

Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Mobile Processor
17.3” High Definition+ (1600x900) LED Screen
1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 Graphics card
4096MB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 RAM
500GB (7,200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive
Windows 7 Home Premium

IMHO a very nice spec for the money and the mobile i7 CPU is an absolute beast.

As for dell laptops, my family has 3 - all work great. My Inspiron 9400 has been with me for years and is still going strong.

Yeh I guess there's nothing with as good specs for the price:) Will suggest it.

What brands are considered the best for reliability?
