Hi All,

I updated my old Dell XPS laptop to windows 10 (via download) the other day and now it wont start to desktop, it remains in a loop with a black screen that says "Diagnosing your PC" and a white dotted circle, or sometimes it'll get stuck on a blue screen with a :( saying " Your PC ran into a problem ... driver_irql_not_less_or_equal storahci.sys".

Apparently this is a common problem, however I can't figure out how to get out of it.

Have you seen the desktop at all with w10 on this laptop?

If you have, then it's activated, so you can create a windows 10 usb installation on a working pc, then boot from the USB to reinstall windows.

Windows 10 media creation tool.

Not sure if i properly checked the requirements, but it popped up that I could download windows 10 for free so I just assumed it was all good.

I did see the desktop yes, straight after the install. But then after I shut it down, it did this. If I boot from a USB and reinstall windows, will that wipe my HD as I have stuff on there that isn't backed up?

No, I don't have an ESET AV installed.

It will wipe the drive so I would recommend taking the hard drive out, attach it to another PC and then back up everything before reinstalling Windows.

Probably a driver conflict of some sort.. definitely the kind of thing that a fresh install should sort out!

try holding the power button for 5 seconds while laptop is in loop mode. This will shutdown Laptop......or remove battery
Now restart laptop, this sometimes brings you to the screen (Preparing Automatic Repair)

You may have to try this a couple of times, from there choose advanced options > Enable Safe Mode

Then To Go Back To Previous Build.........................
To do this, open the Start screen or Start menu and select Settings. Navigate to Update & security > Recovery. Click or tap the “Get started” button under “Go back to an earlier build” to uninstall the current build of Windows 10 and go back to the one you were using previously

Ok thanks. How would I go about connecting the HDD to another PC? Is it simply a case of buying an adapter cable and just plugging it into a PC, with something like this:

and actually how would the HDD be powered?

Sort of, you need a USB SATA dock, it should mention it can power up a 3.5" drive.
