Hello,
I am a hardware newbie. I am looking to buy a laptop under £400 which I understand is very restrictive.
I don't really need any GUI, ideally I could use some X window system with a very resource conscious window manager (no Gnome/Kde), but I still need to use X.
I would use this laptop for c++ development with gnu compiler or clang, multithreading w boost::thread/ openmp, and qt for numerical data display and charting.
I have gcc processes for each compilation unit that reach 800Mb reasonably often.
Here are my requirements:
. New
. From some reasonably known seller (perhaps through overclockers)
. cpu: core2 or later microarchitecture (later the better). dual core, preferably quadcore
. RAM: 4Gb, but 8GB would be better
. hard drive: no importance, cheapest possible, preferring speed to size
. GPU/graphics: cheapest, still allowing to use xemacs with a reasonable resolution.
. sound/webcam/games/multimedia: don't care
. brand: I like Toshiba but they are way too expensive
How do I find the optimal laptop, if I accept unknown brands, if past users have had good experience with...? Does this website allow multi criteria search where I could input this criteria?
Any advice appreciated,
regards,
