Laptop using internet when idle ?

My girlfriends laptop seems to be using the internet when it is idle ? The small monitor icon at the bottom right of the screen is lit up permanently when no actions are being taken, likewise the light on my modem-router lights up indicating traffic is moving through it. Any idea on what might be happening or what is causing this ?

Not that uncoming, various software will be checking for updates and things.

Could be a virus or malware though.

No I cannot think of any application that would make the laptop behave like this, there are no torrent or iplayer installed
