Hey guys :)
I've just ordered a new laptop from Dell, Inspiron 640M with a Core 2 Duo Processor, the T5500 (1.66 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache, 667 MHz FSB).
I want to know if this processor will rival my desktop - i've got a Pentium D 805 @ stock speed (2.66Ghz)

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance :D

seriously?

that's Language! great news! i ordered it just for surfing the net, bcos i dont like have my studio computer connected to the net - but my studio computer is ******* around with me, so it looks like i'll be able to do some production on my laptop until i can get my desktop sorted! :D :D :D

sweeeet!!

i need a comparison tho; how fast *** my pentium d have to run in order to keep up with the laptop?
3Ghz? More?

:)

well my mates pentium d at 4.2 ghz doesnt even beat my x2 3800 when clocked to 2.8ghz and they both get 31s super pi times....and that c2d should get under that so I reckon it'd take a 4500MHz P4d to beat a 1.66GHz c2d, might sound on the high side but its probably not as far off as many think in gaming.

my desktop has 2Gb RAM, the laptop only has 1Gb - will that make a difference to the performance? I'll be doing audio creation & editing.

i'm a n00b to all this, can u tell? lol :p

I imagine that it would begin to matter if you were working with very large datasets. For instance if you were sequencing MIDI and were calling hundreds or thousands of instruments you could see a difference.

RAM is pretty cheap these days. ;)

seeing as i've bought it from Dell, would it be relatively easy/hard to install some extra RAM in the future? the extra stick of RAM was working out too much for my budget when I purchased it a few days ago

EDIT: wrong sub-forum i know :o

RAM is usually the easiest part to upgrade on a laptop. It's a piece of cake on most every Dell I've cracked open.

You could just hold off on upgrading until you confirm that it's too slow for your liking. :)

yeah, true say!
it's being delivered tomorrow morning so I don't have to wait long :D :D

thanks for the advice Billy & ghgh; people on this forum are always quick to help! :)

one more question though... opening the laptop up and installing more RAM would void the warranty wouldn't it?

I don't think so. The RAM modules are designed to be user-upgradable and are usually just hidden under a wee panel on the bottom of the device. If you're concerned, phone them up and ask. :)

i think i might have to open this laptop up when the new one comes tomorrow... i've always wanted to see inside a laptop as well :D

thanks a lot man :)
