Laptop will not send via SMTP

Hi All. Really stuck and would like some ideas/advice.

One of my friends just bought a laptop from another friend. The original owner used MS Exchange email and had no problems with the laptop at all.

Friend who bought it wants to setup two POP3/SMTP email profiles. The laptop was not reinstalled when sold, just really cleaned up and everything removed, including old mail profiles. So I created two new Outlook profiles (like I have hundreds of other times) and away I went. Trouble is both mail accounts, which use totally different hosts, refuse to send email. They say they cannot communicate with the SMTP server. I know all the usernames/passwords are correct because email comes in and the SMTP server uses the same details as the incoming.

I have created the accounts on my own PC and using the exact same setup I can send a receive email fine. So it has to be the laptop surely?

My question is. What could be setup on the laptop so it does not talk to the SMTP server? Doesn't seem to be the antivirus/firewall. Could it be some odd DNS settings? A hosts file somewhere. Not sure what else to try.

Any ideas appreciated.

:)

Well his old laptop using the same router can still send mail from those accounts so I figured it can't be that. SSL is off in all cases. Works on the others just not this laptop. Weird.

Thanks for having a think.

I had this issue a while back, it was something utterly odd like putting a space in front of the smtp server name that fixed it due to outlook capitilising the server name or something.
