Just had a friend drop their laptop in. Apparently they had a virus and they cleared it but now the keys are messed up.

'q' works fine but 'e' prints 'e45' and same with other keys printing off symbols and characters.

I assume this is still the virus but seen as thieve attempted to clear it I've no idea of its name.

Anyone know what they could be ?

done the usual reg clean and Nod32 scans in safe mode etc. found 3 or for trojans in the restore files so cleaned , then turned off system restor and virus checked again , still the same

would hazard a guess and say a dos prompt :) or do you mean boot up with a virus checker CD ?

Bit more info i've plugged in an external usb keyboard and that works fine so though i'd install the default keyboard. ohh now the comp didn't like that immediately shutdown then on restart the keyboard and touch pad no longer work and won't reinstall successfully :(

going to try a windows repair see what that does

I think that the problem is more likely to be a keyboard fault (look at where the e,4,5 keys are - all together).

Try a live cd and see if the keyboard fault is repeated - if it is then the answer is keyboard error.
