If you are happy not to go brand new then there are some secondhand bargains to be had that are more than capable of internet/word processing etc.

I got a Compaq Presario 2100 which has an XP-M 2400, 768mb Ram, 60gb hard drive and built in wireless for $500 CAD which works out to be around £250. Sure it has a fairly rubbish SiS onboard graphics card and only a DVD/CDRW but easily capable of most office tasks with ease :)

I bought a laptop through an auction a couple of years ago now and my parents still have it for use, as long as you are reasonably careful you can find some bargains. I used Craigslist for my most recent purchase but I don't know if they have any listings in your area so that might be no go. If you have a bit of patience and time then you could go to the Members Market here, you need 250+ posts and to have been here for 90 days though.
