I need to get some large drives for some PC's. I normally just get WD Blue. These are fine as far as performance, cost and importantly noise is concerned. But they are limited to 6TB as are most drives intended for PC use. I need 10~12TB. Looking at drives these are reasonably rare, there is a WD Red, a WD Gold, and a few others. I am just wondering what other people get? I suspect I will get Red. They are fast enough, cheap enough, and I know they are quiet enough too. The Gold are supposed to be quiet ( never heard one ) but have a relatively high frequency click that's annoying, which may well be a problem. Buying NAS drives for a PC slightly irks me, because of course they are not intended for PC use. Is there anything else I should be considering?

NAS drives will be fine in a PC, they are generally intended for 24/7 operation so are normally slightly better specified than actual PC drives.
The only possible issue with Red drives is some of them are SMR drives which are more suited to archiving than day to day use.

What is the use case?
The other option is to actually have a NAS, and situate it away from the PC, therefore noise wouldn't be an issue anyway

How do you tell if a drive is SMR?

They are data drives for the PC's. Large files though.

Oh I see, it actually says if it is SMR

Hmm yes ( NAS ) it is interesting.
