Large FPS drops after a while

Well, before i get started, my rig spec is in my sig, cept im missing a gig of ram atm...but this problem has been happening even with the full 2gb.

It happens in all games, when i start all is good, usually solid 60+fps on most games...but after a while, the FPS plummets to around 10-15...which is unplayable, and stays around that area (no matter where i look, even at the floor for example).

The only way i can get the fps up again is to alt+tab out and go back in, the fps is then back up to where it was before...but again, a little while later, the fps plummets right back down.

Is this a common problem? Any fix? Am i missing something?! Its really annoying, especially in the likes of BF2, or any other online game where its awkward to alt+tab when your fps plummets mid fight, or worse, in the air :(

Temps are fine for my gpu, no artifacts on ATi tools.. really strange problem!

Thanks in advance - Adam

Card usually sits at like 75c in a game, and i don't think alt+tabbing out for a second would cool the card down that quickly :(

Temps can drop really fast, fact if you get good FPS then it goes bad after XX time so I asked about TEMP's.

Why not run Rivatuner and let it record your temps in real time as you game, once game is closed you can drag the pointer back along the timeline to see max temps at any given time. :)

Sounds like the 320mb is the problem, once it fills up it will start to crawl, so ALT+TABBING back to desktop will clear it, but then it will crawl again when it fills back up, all depending on res, AA/AF etc.. settings you use, someone did mention somewhere the 8800's have a memory leak problem that can cause it, but ive never experienced it with my 320mb GTS, i only game at 1280x1024 though.

I game at 1280x1024, usually with 4 or 8aa, and usually 8 or 16AF, think thats what is causing the slowdowns?

Will the memory leak problem be sorted with drivers or is that more a hardware problem?

Aint got a clue im afraid, i didn't even know they had a memory problem, just saw it mentioned somewhere, but where i can't remember, and mines fine, to rule it out you could try it with no AA i spose, and the multi/super off, see if you still get the massive drops after a while, or try with the lowest game settings, see if it still does it.

I noticed this problem with CoH with a GTS 320MB. I then found this thread.

I have since switched to a 640MB and I no longer have this issue, but some have reported that it effects all 8800 series cards, but if you have more RAM your less likely to experience symptoms.

Yeah, it seems to be a fairly common problem which is going unanswered..

In TDU if i alt+tab out at the very start then go back in, my fps just shoots up by 20-30 frames..(but then stays high for the rest of the game)

Very strange indeed

I get this problem with company of heroes running it in vista64bit with dx10...
I have to quit out of the game and then reload it to fix the problem.

I have a simlar problem, heres the link to the thread I started one it.

It says in the link posted by raves that it could be human interface devices. After checking mine I do have 9 of them in device manager. With only 3 plugged into the PC. Im going to remove em and see if that helps.

Actually i remember now ive experianced something similar ages ago.

When i was playing Tomb Raider Legend, playing it 1280x1024 maxed everything, with 2xAA/16xAF and Supersampling on, started the game it was running great, then when i got to that big room where you have to flip those big boxes up to put on those pressure pads to open the door at the other side, the frame-rate dived.

You know when you get over the other side, and then go up the right hand wall to get that Ankh or whatever it was (cant remember now), well when i got up there and started to hand over hand across the middle the framerate just dived, so i ALT+TAB out, went back in was fine, but i found that to be the Supersampling, must have been filling up the memory, as i tried it all again with it dropped to Multi and it was fine all the time after that, and i know the Super is a killer, but ive never had it in anything else.
