Large Hadron Collider

Also like to add, they say high energy collisions take play in the atmosphere but i thought there was a theory Einstein had which said over distance cosmic radiation loses its energy and shouldn't be any higher than a certain amount?

Also the big difference is that a random bit of cosmic radiation hitting an atom in the atmosphere is not the same, that atom is not travelling in the opposite direction and its happens alone, whereas in the lhc there is a constant beam and these collisions happen billions of times a second.

Read the safety report on the LHC. This is addressed in it.

The long and short of it is that, basically, cosmic rays hit dense objects like neutron stars and white dwarfs, which in turn is actually much more powerful than anything we can create on Earth.

Don't ask me the ins and outs like, but the report does address that.

Unless its common for two relatively dense beams to happen to hit in opposite directions in nature im not convinced its as safe as they say.

Given the amount of cosmic rays and collisions that happen in our galaxy every second, I'd be very surprised if this doesn't happen often.

The naturally occurring collisions that we see are of a far higher energy then the LHC could ever produce.

Exactly, the power we are doing this with is nowhere near on the same scale as what occurs in space. The power levels are totally different.

I have just been reading the comments on the BBC article where it asks you to have your say. The number of retards in this world amazes me, "we shouldn't mess with nature", "it is a waste of money". I wanna kill them, hopefully this will produce a black hole that only targets people with low IQ.

I want to cry after reading some of the stupid posts.

"I think it is all a waste of money n that the goverment could have spent that money on something worthwhile n they dnt have the right to take over the role of god and this wont change anyones life and it wont prove any think becauses no matter what people r still going to belive that god created the universes and have there belives. also they have worried a lot of people at my school they all thought they was going to die !!!!!!

WHAT A WASTE !!!!"

:(, why is the people against it are either from the god squad or can't spell?

That's democracy for you.

Im sick of the people who were like "ZOMG OH NOES WERE ALL GONNA DIE!!!1111!111ONE!11!11ELEVEN" this morning.

I know this might be a stupid question to the physics guys/girls here.....

But if say they were able to create and contain a black hole (a small enough one say) - would it be possible to create experiments on time (as in how time slows down as you near speed of light etc) - or is that just too much.

What outstanding things could we, as an advanced race, do with this new tool.... Some of the media were stating it could even find a cure for cancer ????? I just fail to see how this could be remotely connected to that.

Also, can it provide any additional insight / prove possible relationships into between mavity / black holes ?

Time dilation and other effects proposed by general relativity have been confirmed in several different ways. For instance the GPS satellite system adjusts the time given by the atomic clocks to allow for time dilation from the earths gravitational field.

And what field of particle physics is your doctorate in?

Why do i need that to form an opinion on the information at hand?

No one has argued this happens exactly as the LHC in nature or in the atmosphere, yes there may be higher energy collisions with atoms at rest but these are single chance happenings, on the other hand here we have deliberately setup two confined beams of particles to collide at a single point billions of times a second at pretty high energy's over long periods of time, its simply not the same and you know it.
