Large Hadron Collider

Sorry if a repost but what on earth?

"Even though the experiment apeared worked it caused many children a lot of pressure and distress at school if they had done the experiment but give a better explantion as to what could happen if it worked and the same if it didnt so this would cause less children distress. Being a student myself i found it rather distrating at school to focus nowing that an experiment was going on that could petentional destroy the human race and cause the earth to implode. it will give us a better understaning !

Judging by that, the world kerploding is the least of her problems.

My 17 year old sister has been genuinely scared about this, even my countless reassurances can't take a front page news headline "The world will end in 9 days" out of her mind.

**** The Sun newspaper, seriously **** it

They havent actually completed it yet. They switch it off before it finishes. The proper test hasnt happened. The world could still end.

Your sisters an idiot and you should tell her she should have paid more attention in statistics.

*faceslap* :(

" The beams have not yet been run continuously. So far, they have been stopped, or "dumped", after just a few circuits. By Wednesday evening, engineers hope to inject clockwise and anti-clockwise protons again, but this time they will "close the orbit", letting the beams run continuously for a few seconds each."

Your sisters an idiot

She is but at least she not a ****tard like the person who decided to run that headline in The Sun. Was it a decision made purely for the purpose of selling more papers? Did they want to cause some extent of civil unrest? Are they actually stupid enough to believe what they wrote?

*sigh* :(

I'll be more specific for you...

The world could still end.

Regardless of statistics, I'm not really sure where I stand on the whole thing. In biology, you do not genetically engineer plants to contain certain genes because the consequences of something evolving to counter resist are just too epically bad. Even with a jabillion to one risk.

Its called 'damage control' - minimising the worst of consequences. If the consequence is too high, it doesn't happen.

Black hole is a pretty bogus consequence.

Hmm.

Has anyone read the "have your say" about this on the BBC? It's currently making my blood boil realising that there are a lot of completely uneducated folk out there who genuinly believe this will either destroy the planet or have no impact in the future.

I'd like to think people could never be so damned stupid; then I remember I'm in a world where creationists exist and actually run the most powerful country on the planet.

Agreed. I'm tempted to comment but it will only be lost amongst a sea of "save the world" and "there are starving people" posts.

I dont get it.

For what reason are you causing yourself harm. There are more efficient ways to kill ones self than slapping yourself

Who said anything about self harming? Just so you know, the term 'faceslap' is used as an expression of disbelief or despair
