large image file

Do you mean an image as in a CD image or an image as in a visual image :p ?

There was a thread a couple of weeks back which had some super high res pictures from telescopes in space. They were 300mb+.

Any particular reason why? The only image files of that size I can think of off the top of my head would be raw satellite images. You could try www.mimas.ac.uk although you may need to register to get at the raw (non-compressed) images.
 
My first thought was NASA aswell. However if this is just for 'testing' , you could make one by joining up a bunch of hi-res pictures relatively easily.
