Hi,

I would like to buy a large screen to wall mount in my room. Dont know what model, dont know what size. If I was to decide, I know for a fact the looks of the thing will take over from the actual technical aspect, but, I do like good performance aswell. :D

Are sony worth the extra premium you pay over less "branded" models, or are there gems to be found amongst the more competitively priced screens?

Will be playing games aswell eventually, when I can afford to move away from 1 x 7800gt to dual/quad card's or whatever would be available in my budget at the time?

Oh yeah, budget for LCD TV/monitor would be £1000-£1500. :)

Last thing, regarding screen size for my room. The room length from my sitting position can be from 7-10ft.

The space on the wall is not a problem as seen in the pic. Just I dont want to get a screen too big for my room and at the same time waste money. ;)

Do you want to go for the Dell 30" Monitor ( for the high res) and add a tv card or two to your pc - or do you want a larger 40+ Hdtv with a potentially lower res

Or do you have space for a projector?

My olds have a 27inch lcd TV and imo this would be a little small. I was looking at 37" to 42".

I have seen a samsung plasma for ok £ but again its the looks that caught my eye. This is the model :- Samsung PS42D5S 42" 16:9 Plasma TV .

Will it be suitable for gaming aswell as films?

I have another computer for internet, chatting general messing on the other side of the room. This new screen, whatever it be, will be used with a HTPC setup, atleast thats the plan. I will hopefully use MC 2005 has I have the remote etc and previously had this installed when I had a 21inch screen and pvr350 card.

cheers for the help

Hi David230,

I'd go for the 30" dell if money was no object. A friend of mine has one and it's awesome! However if size is an important factor i think a projector would be your best bet.

To summarise:

A large high resolution LCD display like the dell is v expensive for not a lot of screen (based on what you've been looking at!).

A standard HD LCD is large and relatively cheap but it's resolution is very limited (You could fit 4 HD screens onto the dell 30" screen in resolution terms).

A projector is limited on screen resolution but is not expensive and allows for a wonderfully massive image! :D

Indeed, the money you save buying the projector could allow you to get a fairly large HD television or largish monitor (24" dell) to mount on the wall as well! Best of both worlds!!! ;)

Hope that helps? :)

No problem! Glad i could help!

Post some pics of you're completed set up when it's all installed and up and running!

Happy shopping!

P.S: What kit is that in the pic? I can make out the XBOX

Will do!!

Yes, xbox is on the rack out the way but my Yamaha amp normally sits on there. CD-player is a marantz 63 Ki-sig and the big black box underneath is a silverstone lascala with not much in it. Speakers are MA silver S8's.

Really like the S8's. Nearly got some to replace some mission 771 bookshelf speakers i used to own but had a limited budget and had to go with some Wharfedale Pacific Pi40's instead!

Also, just realised i hadn't commented on the Plasma option you mentioned! Sorry!

With regards to this i can say that the image quality, contrast and vibrancy will be excellent (similar in performance to CRT) but as ever this performance comes at a price. Plasma's, like crt's, have burn issues.

This burn is where static areas of the screen are subjected to the reaction of the plasma over extended periods of time. This reaction causes ghost images of the static text or logo's to remain on the screen!

Another negative point is that the plasma process generates a lot of waste heat which needs to be removed. Due to this some plasma screens can have multiple fans on board to cool - this does tend to create a bit of noise which can be quite intrusive during quieter movie or gaming passages!!!

Hopefully i've not complicated matters further - i'd go the projector / lcd route personally!
