Largish SSD for laptop

Hi all,

I've just bought an Dell XPS 15 laptop that came with a 750 HD. I want to replace this with an SSD and been looking at the best options. Ideally I want a large capacity one (to avoid having 2 drives which I don't need) so 480GB / 512GB would be ideal.

I've seen the 'Adata XPG sx900 512gb' but have never heard of this brand, any ideas if they are any good?

The Crucial RealSSD M4 512GB is on offer this week so also looks like a good deal.

I've been reading that OCZ drives have been problematic (I have a vertex 2 in my pc which I've had no problems with) - any truth to this?

Thanks...

OCZ were problematic (Vertex 2- had issues) I don't think they have such a reputation now though.

Crucial M4s are amazing I have 2!

Thanks, I've had a change of heart overnight and found that I can install 2 HD's in the laptop. This means removing the Optical drive and adding the 2nd drive there using a caddy, then using an external optical drive. (found via various forums last night)

I need to investigate this further but it would mean I wouldn't necessarily need a 512GB SSD, so save some cash and get a 256GB, then install the 750GB drive in the caddy. Hopefully it will work!

For 512gb, the M4 is the best deal at ~£300.

For 256gb, the Samsung 830 can be found for £150ish, and there's £20 cashback - making a fantastic deal on a great drive.

Whatever you decide, avoid Sandforce.

i wonder if a caching ssd would work in a laptop? i cant see why not? youd lose space for the dvd drive though as you would need to install it there and keep your hdd where it was

A quick Google search brings up lots of negative comments on the vertex 4, but mainly because of OCZs bad rep with its customer's... I have no idea personally, just had a quick read of a review and the following comments were not favourable. The review was excellent tho!

I started another thread on this subject so will be interesting to see if anyone has installed a 2nd HD in an optical bay.

I'm probably going to get flamed for this but here goes....

OCZ have had a fair bit of bad press over the years... I'm the first to admit that they've had their fair share of problems. But being a pioneer has it's downsides! Most issues have been with earlier drives and especially some of the early firmware. Though their latest Sandforce based drives (Vertex/Agility 3) still unluckily appear to have some "issues" but that's just not limited to OCZ, all the manufacturers that have used the latest Sandforce controller have had problems (including Intel). Now I'm not trying to downplay the problems / heartache that some have gone through (as I was accused of recently over on good old HEXUS.net forums)... but there is a fair element of people just repeating things they've read and this then ripples through the internet (a bit like a world wide case of Chinese whispers).

What tends to get forgotten at times. Is that most people only post on forums like this when they have a problem, the silent majority that have had no issues what so ever, never get heard. I for one have run a Vertex 2, 2E and now 2x Vertex 4's and never had a single problem in 2+ years and my oldest drive has been in 2 different PC's and now resides in my laptop. And all the drives get hammered.

Having said the above... I think the days of Sandforce are numbered. There are just too many good controllers coming out that don't have the same issues / constraints (EG. the compressible / non-compressible limits of Sandforce).

Though what anyone buys is obviously their choice.

:):):)

PS. Never had an issue either myself with OCZ support. I personally think their forum is pretty good.
PPS. OP... not having a dig at you. Just thought I'd have a rant ;)

Thanks for the thoughts Mikeo, I too have been running a Vertex 2 for quite a while now with no issues and I agree that a lot of users, like myself do tend to visit and post on forums when they have issues. It's always good to hear both sides of the story, especially if you have been out of the loop for a while.
