Hi, I recently bought the following

Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.13GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
Gigabyte GA_P35C_DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 & DDR3 Motherboard
Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C3 667MHz Dual Channel Kit

I put all this in an Antec Sonata II Piano Black Quiet Case - 450W Smart Power PSU with a X1900XT from my current machine.

When I power it on it does not post and does not beep and no video signal but all the fans (GC + CPU) startup and a light on the GC comes on. I have tried/checked the following.

  1. Cleared CMOS both by removing battery for 30 mins and jumper. Both with PSU unplugged.
  2. Tried booting with only CPU+HSF, mobo and PSU
  3. Tried booting with only mobo + PSU
  4. Reseated CPU + HSF several times
  5. Tried building outside the case to eliminate shorts etc

I have checked that both the 4pin 12v ATX, 24pin ATX connectors and the PC speaker are all attached. The PSU runs my current system fine (3700+SD, 1 DVDRW, 2xHD, firewire, many usb attachements).

Am I right in thinking that even without a CPU the mobo should still beep? IF this is the case then the above tests narrow faulty compents to mobo or PSU and given that PSU works on my current system I am assuming that the mobo is the culprit.

Is it time to RMA or is there anything else I can try?

Damian

Have you tried an old cheapo stick of Ram, Gigabyte boards are notorious for undervolting the Ram, sometimes you need to get an el-cheapo stick in there so you can get it to boot, which will let you get into the BIOS so you can up the voltage so that it works with yours, just a thought, and its worth a try before you RMA i suppose, also have you tried one stick at a time, all slots :)

Its interesting because in the Motherboard forums there is this thread HERE which in the first post states that the most common problem is a duff board or ram and then in the Booting issues section mentions fast C2Ds. Surely though if it was ram or cpu there would be beeps when powering on and these compents are missing.

I had the same problem with my Core 2 Duo setup (see sig for spec.) My first Asus board was sent back and found to be faulty, no biggy as i'll get a replacement and all will be well right? WRONG!. Second board i got from OcUK and still the same problem (fresh from the box) so i took it back to OcUK and they testes it and found no faults so i thaught it has to be RAM or CPU that is borked. So i tested the RAM in a mates PC and his posted fine so it had to be the CPU. So last saturday took the CPU to OcUK and had it booked in for testing, rang them today and they have said that the CPU is faulty  .

Going down later to pick up a replacement and i can finally get back on to C2D, fed up with this slow 3800+ 939 :p

only thing i can think of the mobo not even giving of a beep might be a shorting on the case issue? tried it outside the case?

yes tried it all again outside the case.

There is another point - I left the fans spinning for about 10 minutes before turning it off then quickly took off the HSF. The cpu was not hot at all.

Gonzo0, Did your motherboard beep when you tried booting without the CPU?

I didnt try to boot without the cpu, but when the faulty cpu was in there i got no beeps, everything came on, fans, LEDs etc but no display :(

Have you plugged the CPU power plug in next to the CPU? Its a 4pin jobbie, you should have main motherboard power plug (the big one) 4 pin cpu plug and obviously fan plugged into motherboard. I ask as i did this and didnt plug the 4 pin one in and i had the same problem as i hadnt built a machine for years, well before there was this cpu power plug.

after one of my ram sticks went down, if i leave it in, all i get is a black screen, no posts, or display. This problem of yours could be mem related. Try another stick as posted earlier in thread

I don't have access to any other ram.
Anyway if I try booting without any ram in at all there are no beeps (it should beep during post to let you know there is no ram)

.... it may be the Motherboard but as Gonzo0 has pointed out it may also be the CPU, pull the CPU and test it in another rig to elimate the CPU as the problem. If you don't have another rig to test the CPU, then check the stock of both the CPU & Motherboard from where you purchased them. If both are in stock then RMA both components. I say this coz my last RMA took 8 weeks due to no stock. Your just wasting your time if you RMA just the mobo if it's the CPU that's dodgy, if you RMA both you'll save yourself a lot of waiting around.
