Hi Folks,

I currently have the system below:

Ryzen 5 2600 stock Wraith Prism cooler.
MSI Tomahawk Max 2 B450
16GB Ballistix Sport LT 3200mhz
Sapphire RX570 4GB
2x 512gb SSD
2x 1TB HDD
Seasonic Core Gold 500W Semi Modular 80+ Gold

Im looking to pop an RX 6600 in to it next month, but im considering a CPU as well, is there any real benifit going from my 2600 to say a newer R5 5500 or 5600?

Regards

I have no plans to change until 2025 or even later.

I just don't see the point. I'm going to be limited to 3000mhz DDR4 on this B450, but that's it really, still on 2600 and not really struggling at all @ 1440p . Going to drop a 5600 or 5700X in in the Autumn, beef up to 32GB (not really required but RAM is cheap enough) and I'm done.

I have a 5950x, very much overkill for my use and 32GB 3200MHz Ram. I could, maybe see a better graphics card in a couple of years time but I only play at 3440x1440p 100Hz

bit curious as to why you're limited to 3000mhz on the ram as the limiting factor is the cpu's memory controller.

Harware Unboxed did a 2600x/3600x/5600x comparison with a few different GPUs, you'll need to extrapolate a bit but it'll give you an idea.

Seems at 1080p id be better just getting the GPU.

I know, basically cost £169 for my upgrade, think there’s a slight up to 8% bottle neck, but at 1080p 165hz that’s negligible. Might throw a Ryzen 5600 in after Xmas to see me another couple years or so.

5800x3d is the obvious AM4 upgrade path for gaming if you want to stay on the platform for a long time. Personally I wouldn't go to a 5500/5600
Considering OP is looking at a 5500 or 5600, I’d say that the 5800X3D is out of their budget so no, it’s not the obvious choice.

The AMD 5700X is a bit more expensive than the 5600X and has 2 more cores which gives it more legs for the future.

Really should ask OP for his budget.

Quick update, a friend was selling a 5500 for £80, he was using it as a stop gap before a move to an intel system. As much as I would want a 5600 I couldnt pass up that price. Nice improvements, system is a lot snappier, and for my needs the FPS improvemnt is a lot better than I had thought. I am seeing improvements of up to 20-25% in most games and the 1% lows have improved, I think this is due in part to the better single core speed.
