Hey All,

I have been working at a new Argos store since it opened but was only put on a Xmas contract. Now I have just found out today that I am not getting kept on and I am a bit gutted but life goes on. I have no idea why I am not getting kept on because they are short staffed as it is and I have never been off and have only ever been late once but it was only by a couple of minutes. I have never really had any words from management or warnings and they are only getting rid of 5 staff so I am stumped as to why I am not getting kept on.

Anyway back on topic, my last 2 days are Saturday and Sunday so have any of you got any bright ideas of what I can do to get the most out of my last days. I cant take this job seriously anymore since I am being sacked with no reason other than its the end of my contract.

Sad to hear, but in all fairness, it was an Xmas contract, you're not being sacked. The contract has just come to its end. It happens.

God luck in finding a new 'full time' job though bud.

Supermarket will have hours.

Argos works on Unit to Hours system. The more units they sell the more hours they get. Of course each item sold is a unit, so 99p ring or a Couch. I worked at 249 for 9 months, and we would hit units over many many times, but because the bigger retail parks (Hello Manchester) would over spend on their hours so much they'd take it off the smaller stores like us who performed to balance the books. Saturdays with me in the stock room picking over 150 tickets an hour ftl :(

Let everyone use your staff discount and look on the bright side, at least you have the whole of Christmas and New Year off.

Staff discount proof at Argos is a copy of the latest wage slip. So you can't really do that cybermyk.

Hyper your are not being sacked.. Your contract is over! Do you work at the city centre store in Newcastle or Metrocentre at Gateshead? As for others being taken on and you not then well they obviously have something extra. Did you discuss staying on with anyone or if there were any opportunities?

Are these type of decisions final, do you think there would be anyway for me to change their mind

I work at the new store in Gateshead Town Centre which has just opened.

I was trained at the Metro Centre though.

I was on Contract with chester zoo while i was at college, they were short staffed and about 2-3 weeks later i got a phone call off them and they were asking me to come back (after realising i got them about 15,000 people to gift aid in only 4 months ^_^).

Point being they will most likely give you a ring if they think they are short staffed asking you if you are able to come back. If not then i guess they are just tight XD

Maybe the reason you are no longer working there is simply the contract is up... they don't need anymore. Not that you've been sacked or not kept on because you weren't good enough but because that was it (and was specified when you knew it was an xmas contract)?? Or am I missing something here?

Over Summer I hired plenty of people who knew it was only a Summer contract, when the contract ended and I was leaving, they were upset there was no more work, but they were hired specifically for that period and no longer, having been informed of that also.

Just ask them if they have any opportunities to stay on? If these others have already said they are staying on then its most likely too late but you never know.

End of the day its made clear to Temp staff at Christmas that they are employed for the Christmas period only. You were employed en-masse and Argos substantially increases its staffing levels during Peak with temporary staff. Have you been assuming that you were going to be kept on simply for doing a good job?

Just move on don't be bitter it's just the luck of the draw. I'm sure there must be loads of similar jobs out there.

All depends on the size of the store, I work in a small band 1 store and we are only realistically keeping 4-5 xmas temps as hours will get slashed after xmas and january rebin. You really have to make yourself stand out in order to get kept on.

Do you work in the stockroom or shopfloor btw? If you are quite skilled in the stockroom then it might be worth asking the stock manager to stay on at least till after rebin as stockroom hours shoots up for 2 weeks and I am sure he ll need all the help he can get. The stockroom lads was raking in like £350-450 per week during last rebin so its not bad money.

I was trained on Tills, Collection and the stockroom and did a bit of everything. The only reason I am disapointed is because I knew they were a new store so i thought they would have to keep more staff on and therefore I would have a better chance.

I am going to have a word with the manager on Saturday but ussually she doesnt like changing anything.

We are a Argos Extra store with 54 isles.

Good plan, have a chat. Their might be other vacancies in nearby stores if there isnt any there. As mcc49 says ask if you can help out during rebin.

But please, dont do anything silly during your last couple of days. Its immature and you would be suprised at the amount of people who read OcUK at their head office.

It might be worth having a word with the managers, but they would literally looks at facts and figures when it comes to their initial decision. You need to make an decent impression to them.

If you're on shopfloor then try your best to drive those insurances, argos cards and always wear a name badge. In the stockroom? then get those 321 checked, RTS put away in a timely manner, delivery put away ontime with nils checked and dont idle around when its quiet and tidy some shelves. Show the managers what you did at the end of your shift or during it.

I say this because I tell my stockroom team this all the time and those who do those things have a much higher chance of being kept on.
