Latvian (insert sweary) drops a dog off a bridge

You obviously didn't understand the context of my post. It was about dogs, not compassion for all animals. Which is why I compared it to battery hens in the first place. Perhaps you should read arguments before formulating responses.

No I read your post. As I see it you're basically saying its okay to favour one group of animals over another (because one will love you more apparently).

How does that work. You can't preach to people to show compassion to one set of (far less important) animals and just claim that we don't need to for another that we don't like.

One reason is that dogs don't actually matter and domesticated dogs were bred by humans so they're arguably more pointless/our property than any wild creature.

This is why these emotional arguments can't be taken seriously because they're just inconsistent. At first I thought you were joking, but apparently not. And I'm not asking you to care about other animals, but don't then question why I don't care about a dog either.

Since when was I preaching? I'm justifying it, you're saying it's wrong to show more or less compassion for a species of animal.

But it's a stupid statement, to say that people are not allowed favourites. You realise a lot of people live with dogs right? You don't need your family, but you'd be pretty ****** if they all died. Or are you saying you're so emotionally hollow and alpha that it wouldn't bother you because your family is as practically useful to you as a hammerhead shark? Because emotions don't matter right? You're preaching some kind of animal equality that doesn't exist, and there's no reason for it to exist.

The fact is that there are some people on this planet that would rather a human died than a dog. Why? Because some people are just that passionate, and why not? It's up to them to like what they like, they don't need some kind of justifiable clause for every emotion or feeling they have. You like what you like, and dems the rules.

The flipside is that it is also up to people to think that dogs are "just another animal" and not hold them in the same regard.

True, but as I posted above I wouldn't throw any other animal off a bridge to watch it yelping in pain for lols, either. Nor would I condone it. Some of the replies in this thread are nothing more than redirection; smoke and mirrors intended to make a point that if you think it's OK to eat meat then you can't complain when animals (companion or otherwise) are tortured. Clearly those people are nuts, PETA members, or probably both. :p

Of course, but we don't need to be told that we're not allowed to complain or feel angry. If you feel that way then fine, feel that way, just don't tell us we're wrong for showing emotion. Everything is relative, after all.

I watched the video :(

I now feel completely sick to the stomach. I think it's made worse that the dog didn't die instantly.

I can only hope this haunts him for a long time and he gets his comeuppance.

So what about battery farmed chickens. Seeing how they're kept in terrible conditions for months on end, I'd say that's pretty bad. What about some instances of animal testing, what about the fur industry, etc.

awful too, also the fur industry in china is disgraceful

I think Haz and Spinal have their wires crossed, I don't think Haz was accusing you of not having a clue Spinal, he was telling you to ignore the bloke you quoted (dangerstat) because he doesn't have a clue.

opps your right im in agreement with spinal lol

Update for the ones interested: The dog was in care since the abuse but it has ended up dying.

The guy is getting sentenced today sometime but I doubt it will be too severe, according to the link below this family is pretty known for animal abuse, worst thing to happen to them was to get charged $8...
