Lava Lamps

I just plugged one in, its been on for 2 hours...theres no movement whatsoever just wondering how long do these things take to start working?

I replaced the bulb, dont know what the wattage was but I have a 40w bulb in now. It feels hot around the bulb but not very warm at the top.

Is 40w enough juice?

mine says MAX 40W on it so i think it should be enough, they do take a while to start the first few times, if you look at the bottom it should have melted slightly by now.

Did you replace the bulb before turning it on for the first time? Why :confused:

Edit: My old lamp took a good half hour or so before it got going.

Aaah, in which case I can't help you. Saying that, 2 hrs should have seen something happen. Check with the manufacturer.

If it's cold to begin with, very cold, it may take about 3 or so hours to start working.

Is there a chance it might have been "off for too long" and its too solidified and wont work again?

No I doubt it. It's a wax that should last pretty much forever unless it's been put through extreme hot (as in boiling) or extreme cold (as in frozen)

If it doesn't work after several hours I don't think it will at all. It should even work with a bulb wattage lower than what you have.

Just don't do anything stupid and try heat it up on a stove or something haha >.<

Mine has a 30W max but I see that now you can use a 40 watt clear golf ball SES bulb as a replacement.

It was on Mythbusters a while back. Some guy tried to heat his lava lamp on a stove, it exploded and shredded his heart.

still a big blob at the bottom but some of its at the top now and occasionally small blobs moving up and down
