Lawn Experts - need help

Is it worth the time, effort and money? The person moving in might not care about the garden or might even see it as an attractive little project themselves.

Personally I think turf is the way to go. It can be gotten much cheaper by looking in the yellow pages than garden centres.

Definitely, its really bad at the moment, the back garden is usable but looks a state because of it. I am not talking about getting a competition winning lawn here, just....one which looks like grass and you wouldnt look twice at, rather than it being an eyesore to have the curtains open looking at it :p

I'd not bother with lawn if you are letting it. If you do and expect the garden to be kept then you will need to provide the equipment for them to mow the grass (at least every house i rented/let provided that) etc. Dig it all out, lay some weed control fabric liner, then lay some decorative flags so the people have somehere to sit and gravel the rest.

Search for pcitures of gravel patios on goole for ideas.

Even if you turf your lawn you are still likely to have problems from the old weeds. The old saying "One year's weed is seven years seeds" comes to mind.

Perennial weeds such as dandelion produce seeds which lay in the ground like time capsules and germinate over many years.

Lawrence Hills (The Henry Doubleday Research Association) states in one of his books that Dock Leaves can germinate over a period of fifty years.

I had a new neighbour a few years ago and the first thing he did was to turf his lawn, within weeks last years dandelions were pushing up from the soil layer below the turf. Unfortunately he let them flower and seed and his lawn was worst than when he moved in.

Strangely as it seems, if you are unable to mow the lawn for a few days because of rain, it’s better to pick dandelion flowers than let them seed.

I’d say turf it and then be prepared to treat any weeks that appear with selective weed killer and pick any flower-heads that appear before they get the opportunity to seed.

Good Luck
