Lawn - Top Dressing

I laid a new turf lawn 2 years ago .... after a very very wet winter, there is plenty of growth, but feels like walking over peoples.
After advice I could find in books, bought in and applied bought in professional Top dressing ... levelled it out with back edge of a wide landscaping rake.

You could see the top dressing levelling out, in most of lawn if flow3 down between grass and disappears, but what I have ended up with, are lots of small patches where it has levelled up, but at moment covers the grass.
Will grass grow up through this happily ? Don’t want to kill what is there.

You should have the tips of the grass blades showing through else its likely those areas will die off... Alternative is to throw some seed down and keep it well watered.

Presumably you used a 70/30 top dressing mix, this is absolutely fine and levels more easily than 50:50 or pure top soil.

Add some seed to the patches where grass has been smothered. Spread it evenly and rake it in very lightly.

I would then personally apply some more top dressing by hand over the top about 1/8th inch until you can no longer see the seed. Yes, this will create a very slight mound but it'll not be noticable in the long run and should give you a higher germination rate.

If you can, water with a mist or fine spray rather than heavy or large droplets to save disturbing and moving the seed.

If you've got some feed or pre-seed feed put this down too.
