The JSA seems criminally innefficient and badly run. My girlfriend is going through hell trying to get about £400 that she is owed off them. I shouldnt really go into too much detail, but the short story is she was made redundant at Christmas, and relunctantly signed up for JSA while looking for other jobs. And when I say looking, I dont mean half-heartedly; she's well qualified and experienced as a CAD engineer and spent every single day ringing around and emailing CVs. She was going into the local job centre to sign on and one day they just said "Oh, the claim has been cancelled by the main office".
It turns out that when she signed on she told them all her information and informed them that she was in part time education (a day-release at university for an HNC, fully paid off by her previous employer). Due to a cockup, she was somehow listed as in full-time education. Apparently the JSA main office in Canterbury tried contacting her twice to get proof that her course was only part time (they allegedly sent two letters which she never recieved, and phoned her - once - from a blocked number and left no message). She of course never heard anything, and went into the Job Centre for two more meetings after the claim had been cancelled and no-one told her about the situation "because we use two seperate systems that don't communicate with each other"

.
So anyway, after much arguing, filling out hundreds of forms, and sending them signed documentation to prove her education course is only part time, they are still refusing to pay her all the money she is owed. Which means her landlord is on to her for rent that is owed. It's annoying because even though she has supplied the relevant proof about her education, they are still saying that they made every effort to contact her to gain the proof they required. They didnt (I cant believe they cant have left a note on the system so that the next time she went into the Job Centre to sign on, she was informed in person) and why should she be blamed because she failed to rectify the situation they cocked up in the very first instance?
The galling thing is that she has bene nothing but open, honest and co-operative since day one. She didn't lie about her education, informed them of all the correct details and due to a pro-active approach is now back in decent full time work. Yet after about 4-5 years of working full time and paying into the system, she now cant claim a mere few weeks worth of financial support that she is entitled to because the JSA system ****ed up and is refusing to honour her legitimate claim, while the media seems to be full of stories about people who don't make the effort like her, don't care, lie about their actions and still mange to claim a healthy dose of taxpayers money regardless. If she had just lied and not mentioned her education, she probbaly would have had the money paid, and this entire episode put behind her by now.
