How long does an average LCD back light last for ?

I have seen 10000 hours being quoted here and there, but would like clarification to whether or not this is the case.

For your information, I am referring to cold cathode fluorescent lighting :)

It depends on the luminance you're running at and the heat generated by the bulbs and the other components. Generally the bulb itself will last 60k-100k hours but will fade and change colour increasingly so beforehand. On many models the high-voltage inverter can be expected to last 4-6 years without packing in so that's often the first to go.

Got one that has been running for 8 hours minimum per day for 10 years

What size is that screen? The smaller ones tend to suffer less from inverter problems as they don't require the same amount of power and generate less heat stress and all that in the process. I have seen many 22-24" CCFLs fail in around half that time but some of the 20" Dells I used to use are still going strong.

My 18.1" Eizo is nine years old and is fine apart from some dark shading down the upper RH edge. Brightness is at 50%.

sorry meant to state size etc. it's a Sharp ll-t1620 16" 1280x1024. Sits alongside a 20" widescreen Samsung at 4 years old. The Sharp cost me over £300 way back when

Ah yeah I remember the bad old days of early LCDs. I used them at work quite early on but it took me quite some time (surprisingly for me) to shift from CRTs at home. You should still have some life left in both of those ones. I wasn't sure if the OP was asking because he wanted to purchase a modern CCFL (which would be larger and more likely to suffer the problems in my original post) or if he owned one from a while ago and wondered how long it had left.

Definitely not getting rid of them just because I can...both doing me proud :)

Still using some 15" ones in the office. The software runs at 1024x768 perfectly fine, so no need to upgrade till they go pop. Still not had as much up-time as my Sharp though!

Were I work we have some machines which use 10" ~ LCD displays, these have Cold Cathode lighting, these were commissioned in 2001 and I replaced all bulbs in the past couple of years, the last one went earlier this year, all screens were on 24/7.

Years. Work have LCDs that get used 8+ hours daily dating from 2001/2002 that are still going strong if a little less bright than they once were. We get the occasional failure but nothing noticeable.
