LCD Monitor displaying faulty blue lines

hi All,

Yesterday my LCD monitor (a Samsung 226BW) started to display blue horizontal lines all the way down the screen. I think I had just finished a session on World of Warcraft.

So I decided to install the latest Nvidia graphics drivers for my graphics card (a GEforce 9800 GTX, PCI Express). But that did not work, and I assumed there might be a problem with the hard drive so I decided to format and re-install the PC as I had not done that in a while and my PC games list was piling up!

But I still have the problem, where even when I am re-booting, I can see dots everywhere on the screen and then when it gets into Windows, I see the 'wavy' blue horizontal lines all the way down the screen.

The Samsung monitor drivers have been installed also, and I opened the PC to make sure the cables have been pushed in properly on the gfx card. I managed to check my monitor on another PC and it works fine.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

It sounds like the graphics card itself is on its way out. This can be due to many things from poor contact between the cooler on the card and the core or even problems with the memory.

Sometimes you can squeeze a little more life out of the card by giving it a good clean and getting rid of any dust but i suspect you may need to be looking at a graphics card rma or a new card.

hi vince,
Thanks for your reply. I had a feeling it might be that, is it possible the DVI cable could be at fault here?

I doubt it is the memory. I have 2x 2gb sticks of ram, I took one out and booted up - and then did the same with the other memory stick. It boots into Windows each time yet I still have the same graphics problem.

Thx

Hi Kop,

It is possible that the cable is causing an issue however from experience this is unlikely, faulty cables from experience seem to put either a green hue over the screen or partial disruption to a section of the screen so I would say in this case that the dvi is fine.

When I mentioned memory what I meant was the dedicated memory on the graphics card itself, often shot memory causes these kind of display disruption issues.

No problem good luck with the card... The first thing I would try is a good clean followed by contacting the manufacturer to see if you can get any joy on a replacement or repair.
