Im thinking about getting a new monitor. Ive looked at them a lot over the past few days and ive settled (I think) on the dell 2407WFP-HC. Its just spending so much money on something im not sure about is really hard.

My question may be silly but here goes anyway... is it harder to run games smoothly on a big screen like this. Will my frames per sec be stuck at something low like 60fps? If im talking nonsense then forgive me but I have reason to believe theres method in my madness! (something to do with hertz and stuff I think).

The only reason im thinking so seriously about it now is because I got a new 40" lcd tv and its absolutely brilliant so im hoping these monitors are really good too :)

Of course games will run slower at a higher resolution if you don't have a great graphics card with lots of memory. FPS will be limited to the refresh rate if vertical sync is turned on (but that don't matter much as if you get over 60FPS all the time turn it on, if under or around 60FPS turn it off for better performance). Vertical sync stops screen tearing by stopping your FPS going over the screens refresh rate (the refresh rate is how often a second the screen updates, often 60, so when you FPS goes over 60 more frames are being output than the screen can show every second so some frames will tear over to the next one). Vertical sync can be turned on but will lower performance (turn it on when your FPS is consistantly over 60, say around 80-100) and turned off when you need the extra performance (say when you get around 20-30FPS consistantly, as turning it off will improve it by 10-20FPS depending on the game etc, and as long as it doesn't go over 60FPS you won't get screen tearing).

NO its not harder to run games on a bigger screen.......higher resolution YES
your fps wont be stuck anywhere unless like the post above mentions you enable vsync....you dont really need to enable vsync at all unless the game is suffering badly from tearing.
some games dont run as smooth at 60fps even though you cant see more than your refresh rate...<i could explain that a bit better but im tired lol

The refresh rate on a 24" monitor @ 1920x1200 is always 60Hz, this is the maximum that DVI can push out at that res (bandwidth wise), so it follows that 60 fps is the maximum that you would want to display as any more than that would be superfluous; just turn quality up on the game to enjoy the added details.

Also, 60 fps isn't really low - you'll probably struggle to get anywhere near that on a screen this size in certain games.

One thing to note is that if you are sensitive to input lag (time between moving the mouse and the action moving on the screen) I would stay away from the current crop of monitors based on Samsung S-PVA panels as they all have stupidly high input lag (60+ ms). The 2407WFP-HC is a bit lower at around 30, but the monitor has other problems (google it for a better description than I could ever provide). If you are just using the monitor for gaming and don't care about accurate colour reproduction then go for a TN panel and save yourself the cash (spend it on a killer graphics card for instance).

I would recommend going down to a decent electronics retailer so that you can see a few monitors in the flesh and get a feel for the kind you'd like to go for, then come back to OCuk and get it cheaper!
