LCS Debt Recovery

Just had a letter come through from a company called LCS.

By the sounds of things they're a debt recovery agency.

I'm 99.9% sure this is to do with the energy used between the person selling the house and us moving in. The day we moved in I took the meter readings and setup an account with our current provider (Sainsburys/Britsh Gas) who must have passed this on to Eon who were the current providers at the time, as eon setup an account for us so that we could switch to Sainsburys. I have a feeling the previous owner left the fridge running (he moved out ~2 weeks before we moved in/signed the contracts)

A copy of the letter is here;

I've had a quick Google and there seems to be mixed comments about whether or not to reply. Presumably, as this is just an "investigation" I'm well within my rights to just chuck it in the bin?

Any help would be useful :)

Wouldn't it be easy to just let them know the date you took occupancy rather than be all obstructive, may make life easier in the long run.

Having a google for LCS credit management isn't inspiring - then again I'm guessing half the people posting are trying to find a way to weasel out of money they do owe but even then the other half are tales of being harassed constantly over debts they don't owe with proof provided in their posts that they don't owe.

If what you can find by googling is any indication then no it would seem best not to get in touch with them in any shape or form and especially don't provide them with any contact details they wouldn't otherwise have (which is pretty much the purpose of this letter - fishing for other ways to use to hassle someone over the "debt").

I would have thought they would have already gotten this from EON as they're not asking for an amount.

Tbh, I only know the guys name, I've no idea where he's moved to now.

I think it'll be a matter of put it in the bin and I'll give my partner the heads up about the company either knocking or sending more letters.

If you're going to contact someone re: this then perhaps just contact EON and confirm with them that you gave them a meter reading when you moved in and what that meter reading was for. You don't need to deal directly with this debt collection agency, but ensuring EON have the correct meter reading and acknowledge that back to you would be good for peace of mind on your part. Even better perhaps find a way to e-mail them or send a letter and keep a record of it.

I was just thinking more along the lines of:-

We only moved in on (insert date here) and before then the occupants name was (insert name here) but I'm sorry I don't have a forwarding address.

Unless you can pass the letter onto the Landlord/Rental Agent for them to complete.

Inform them of your Fee Schedule for supplying the required information and ask if they wish to proceed.

I would say an initial payment of £100 and £35 per question is more than reasonable.

Should they agree and pay up I would have course be expecting a small Consultation fee for my advice. :D

Can we have the real doofer back ? This imposter has failed to suggest a forwarding address of 'The Sun Centre, Rhyl'.

EDIT: on a more helpful note, sign up to something like Noddle in case these shysters stuff up your address' credit rating and deal direct with EON to remind them you already supplied meter readings and consider the matter closed.

I'm currently using clear score. I've tried Noddle a few times and I've never been able to sign up.

I'll get in contact with Eon and see what they say and get them to put it in an email.

Used eons live chat. Had the transcript emailed to myself. Dates confirmed from the day we moved in and the readings provided.

Think that's my bottom covered :)

There's no danger of that, you can't blacklist an address or most renters credit scores would be in the bin.

nice one, if this LCS place carries on then just get back in touch with Eon and request they call off their apes

It's more likely that the previous owner didn't give eon any forwarding details, and when you wanted the supply moved to another supplier and provided the meter readings which were most likely handed over to eon, they generated a bill for the previous owner and since they didn't know where to send it, they sent it to a debt recovery company who as a first port of call will want to clear you of being the actual person who owes the money (which is why the first two questions ask who you are and when you moved in).

If you don't know where the previous owner is, you'll have to tell them since they are the ones charged with collecting the money not eon, and if you don't give them the information they could consider you to be the original debtor and they can gain access to your property without your permission and change the meter to a pre payment meter linked to the original supplier leaving you to pay off a debt that you don't owe.

Just give them what information you know even if you don't have a forwarding address for the previous occupant as they can find that out in due course.

Im sure that's what they're after. I've just remembered that he left the heating on as well so I reckon there's probably about £30 outstanding.

I'm surprised no poo or letter boxes have been mentioned with this being Gd.

Thanks for the responses though

Did you buy the house from the previous owner? Surely their responsibility ends at the point they no longer own the property and any energy used after that point is the responsibility of the new owner? It's not the previous owners fault you didn't move in/take a reading till after 2 weeks.
