Leaked AMD Ryzen 7 1700X vs i7 6800K Benchmarked In 13 Games & Power Consumption.

It's not about how it does vs Kabylake i7s. It's about whether or not you get 60 fps and stable frametimes. So yes, it's still gonna eat through any game available right now.

What I am saying is that in some games, an modern i7 will trounce the 2500k

ie

Look at the Crysis 3 minimums for example^ I witnessed exactly the same thing in that game. In those heavily grass filled area (all the grass physics) my frames were LOADS higher when I swapped from a 2500k to a 3770k a few years back.

The 2500k is still good and can still play games well, but in some instances it will not give you anywhere near as good an experience as a modern i7 and for example in Crysis 3, can seriously hinder your minimum framerates.

What is the life span of a PC system these days, judging from around here its not all that long

People on the forum change their system frequently because they are enthusiasts and like to play with the latest tech.
In terms of the *need* to change system......... systems are long-lasting and don't need to be changed often.

I'm still running a seven year old i7 930 @ 3.65ghz and I've just played Doom without any issues whatsoever. The GPU seems to be more of an issue rather than the CPU.
CPUs haven't progressed all that much in recent years. I noticed a big change when Core2Duo came out and since then, it seems to have been in small steps.

Who needs 8C/16T now but may need in x years time.

Absolutely... I am a mental idiot when it comes to PCs

I knocked up my latest server, purely because I wanted a single PC with a ton of cores...
At first it was a dual CPU 32Core, and now its got 4 Opteron CPUs with 64 Cores, purely because I wanted to fill a whole screen with a list of just teh CPUs - thats what you call a total tool.

Do I need it? NO! - do I want it... YEAH!

When wasit last actually used for the proper power? Almost a month now, but to be fair, I have just moved home and I have not yet setup my PC rooms ( Yes, plural )

If you check through what the majority of people do here, given its a bit of a geeky website, most are in the stage of upgrading to the lastet bits of whatever. Some are fine withwhat they have, even if its a fair age.

I feel that in most cases, people do like I do, and that is upgrade when there is really no true need for it.

My own game playing for example, I only really play WarHammer 40K Dawn of War and its family, Company Of Heroes etc, and Trials Evolution / Fusion, and a few other games... I love FPS games like COD, UT, Quake and so on, however I have disabilities that have very much fored me to no longer play them and so in terms of CPU and GPU power, my setups are all vastly overkill... even my Media Center has an ATI 470 and all that does, is play Emmerdale farm and Corrie now and then! - hell, even the SoundCard is an ASUS STX on it and even more thick, is that I have just last week, took it to 32GBRAM... It is still only an AMD 1090T though, but even then, thats too much too!

my personal favourite PC of mine, is still my AMD 8350.... I really dont know why, Ithink it is because when I built that up, it was special because I was desperately broke, and not long after, I had my accident and it stayed rock solid without a single glitch in all the times I was in hospital and the entire family were using it and it just never once gave them any issues, when the previous PC that I replaced it with, was certainy no where near as rock solid. but its also now one of the slowest systems I have.

Its still my baby though!

My god I waffle.

I think it's like q6600 time.
It's still a good processor but newer ones are ultimately better....

fatracoon, great post. Passion for things make your buy more than you might otherwise, need but its all understandable. I game at 2k resolution, crysis 1,2,3 presently. Awesome stuff :)
